Ryan HokeI'm Ryan Hoke (ryan@ryanweather.org), and for two years I've been bringing you accurate and detailed weather information for the Louisville, Kentucky area. Building on a strong childhood interest in weather, I created Ryan Weather during my sophomore year of high school to help prepare me for a career in meteorology. After months of brainstorming, I put together a website and produced my first weather forecast video on January 16th, 2007. My forecast was way off and I needed quite a bit of practice, but it was a start!

WAVE-TV - May 2007

Once the site was complete and on the Internet, things started getting interesting. Just 5 months later I was given the opportunity to appear on WAVE 3 TV in Louisville to promote my website with meteorologist John Belski during a job shadow at the station (click here to view). Not only did this surprise me, but it also signaled the lift-off for my website. Page view counts came in by the hundreds in the hours following my broadcast debut on the station.

Storm Chasing
- May/June 2008, June 2009

In February 2008, I was hired as a guide for Storm Chasing Adventure Tours (www.stormchasing.com) for two weeks in May and June of 2008. My job is to show guests on the tour what is happening with the storms around us by using streaming weather data and advanced radar software. Our tour group saw four tornadoes near Aurora, Nebraska during my second year of chasing in June 2009. These were the first tornadoes I've witnessed and you can see them in the video below:

The Weather Channel - August 2008

I submitted one of my forecast videos to a kids video contest for The Weather Channel in July 2008. After judging was completed in August, I was named the winner of the "Most Likely to Become a Meteorologist" category.

The Courier-Journal January 2009

A feature article about Ryan Weather was published in the Southeast Neighborhoods section of The Courier-Journal on January 14th, 2009. This article contained a behind-the-scenes look at how I got into meteorology and information about the website. Click here to read the article.

First Live Broadcast - February 2009

A contest from WAVE 3 TV called "Become a WAVE 3 Weathercaster" started accepting submissions in November of 2008. After judging was completed in January 2009, my video forecast was declared the winner. As part of the prize, I was given the opportunity to present the weather forecast with John Belski on the 5:30pm February 9th, 2009 newscast. To see my first live weathercast, click here.

The Road Ahead

I'll be attending Mississippi State University starting August 2009 to earn my professional meteorology degree with emphasis in broadcasting. During this time I hope to obtain an internship or part-time broadcast meteorology position, with the intent of finding a full-time position at a television station or other media outlet when I graduate.
